Bog oak is a form of timber unique to the bog lands of Ireland. The special acidic condition and the lack of oxygen in the bogs have ensured the preservation of these trees forever. As the bogs are being reclaimed for agriculture or exploited for fuel, huge roots and trees are thrown up to the surface. This special timber, which has been miraculously preserved for thousands of years, is once again awakened from its long slumber and given a new lease of life through the artist's hands.
Bog wood is more ancient than the pyramids of Egypt and the prehistoric monuments of Newgrange. About ten thousand years ago saw the end of the ice age retreating from Ireland, it left behind a land in which birch, lichen and willow grew. After another few thousand years a forest of oak and pine covered the whole of Ireland. These great blankets of forest lasted for five thousand years, before eventually succumbing to the growth of the peat-forming plants and covering them completely within its swamps.
